Norwegian soprano Margrethe Fredheim is recognised as one of the leading Scandinavian lyric-dramatic sopranos of her generation. Combining vocal warmth, dramatic intensity and exceptional stylistic versatility, she has established an international career encompassing both opera and concert performances across Europe.

Following more than a decade as a principal artist at Theater Erfurt and Staatstheater Kassel, Fredheim has built an extensive repertoire of more than forty leading roles. Her signature interpretations include Elsa (Lohengrin), Desdemona(Otello), Tosca, Kátá Kabanová, Lisa (The Queen of Spades), Donna Elvira, Contessa Almaviva, Agathe, Fiordiligi, Marie (Wozzeck), Amelia Grimaldi (Simon Boccanegra), as well as Freia, Gerhilde and Gutrune in Wagner's Ringcycle.

As a guest artist, she has appeared with Deutsche Oper Berlin, Oper Leipzig, Glyndebourne Festival, Theater Chemnitz, Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and Staatstheater Braunschweig. On the concert stage she has collaborated with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, demonstrating equal distinction in both symphonic and operatic repertoire.

Her recent highlights include Lisa in The Queen of Spades at Oper Leipzig, Elsa in Lohengrin at Theater Chemnitz, and the title role in a concert performance of Tosca with Vestfold Symphony Orchestra.

An acclaimed competition laureate, Fredheim has received First Prize at the Lauritz Melchior International Singing Competition, the Gold Medal at the Hong Kong International Singing Competition under the patronage of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, the Mozart Prize at the Wilhelm Stenhammar International Music Competition, and was a laureate of the Elizabeth Connell Prize.

A graduate of the Norwegian Academy of Music, the Manhattan School of Music in New York and the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Margrethe Fredheim continues to expand her presence on the Scandinavian opera scene while maintaining an active international career. During the 2026/27 season, she joins the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet in productions of Die Walküre and Elektra, marking an important new chapter in her artistic development
