Danish soprano Clara Cecilie Thomsen is recognised as one of the leading lyric sopranos of her generation in Scandinavia, admired for the elegance of her musicianship, vocal clarity and expressive stage presence. A principal member of the ensemble at the Royal Danish Opera since 2021, she has established herself in both Mozart and lyric repertoire, earning recognition for performances combining vocal elegance, dramatic sensitivity and stylistic finesse.
Recent highlights include Gilda in Rigoletto and Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier at the Royal Danish Opera during the 2025/26 season, the latter earning her a nomination for the prestigious Reumert Award. Her repertoire at the Royal Danish Opera and Den Jyske Opera includes Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Governess (The Turn of the Screw), Musetta (La Bohème), Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro) and Gilda (Rigoletto).
Alongside her operatic career, Clara Cecilie Thomsen is an increasingly sought-after concert singer, having appeared with leading Scandinavian orchestras including the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Danish Orchestra, Aalborg Symphony Orchestra and Copenhagen Phil. International appearances have brought her to the Musikverein in Vienna with the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich under Michael Schønwandt, and to Tiroler Festspiele Erl alongside Helmut Deutsch. In 2025, she appeared at the BBC Proms in Royal Albert Hall as soprano soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra under Fabio Luisi.
She has worked with conductors including Paolo Carignani, Johannes Witt, Marie Jacquot, Julia Jones and Michael Boder, and with directors including Kasper Holten and Barrie Kosky.
Upcoming engagements include her debut at the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo as Anne Truelove in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress during the 2026/27 season.
A graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the Royal Danish Opera Academy, Clara Cecilie Thomsen studied with renowned vocal teacher Susanna Eken and is also an alumna of the Aix-en-Provence Academy’s Mozart Residency.
Her concert repertoire includes Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s St John Passion and St Matthew Passion, and the requiems of Mozart and Brahms.
Clara Cecilie Thomsen is the recipient of numerous distinctions, including the Copenhagen Opera Festival Talent Prize, the Léonie Sonning Talent Prize, the Carl Nielsen Talent Prize, the Danish Critics’ Talent Award and the Aalborg Opera Prize. In 2023, she was appointed Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog, followed by the Else Brems Prize in 2024 and the Schiøtz Prize in 2025.
