“A mature synthesis of structural clarity and emotional urgency.”

— World Federation of International Music Competitions, 2026

British conductor Matthew Rhodes is rapidly establishing himself as one of the most promising conductors of his generation. Winner of the 2026 Princess Astrid International Music Competition in Trondheim, he has already worked with a distinguished range of European orchestras and is developing an increasingly strong profile in both symphonic and operatic repertoire.

Rhodes first attracted international attention in 2023 as a semi-finalist in the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in London, followed by his participation in the prestigious Mahler Competition with the Bamberger Symphony Orchestra. That same year, he was selected for the talent development programme of Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen and made debuts with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, Gävle Symphony Orchestra, Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra and Västerås Sinfonietta.

Further engagements followed with the Oslo Philharmonic, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Malmö Symphony Orchestra and Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, as well as the WDR Symphony Orchestra and Gürzenich Orchestra in Germany, where he appeared as part of the German Conductors Award.

Alongside his symphonic career, Rhodes has developed a particular interest in opera. His operatic engagements include Johann Strauss's Die Fledermaus at Vattnäs Konsertlada, Puccini's Turandot with the Augusta Symphony, and Paul Moravec's The Shining at Malmö Opera, where he worked alongside conductor Patrik Ringborg.

A graduate of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Rhodes continued his studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. He has participated in masterclasses with distinguished conductors including Michael Tilson Thomas, Stéphane Denève, Jorma Panula, David Zinman, Johannes Schlaefli, Bjarte Engeset, Gerard Korsten and Sian Edwards. In 2024, he attended the Tanglewood Music Center, where he was mentored by Stefan Asbury.

Rhodes has received support from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and the Sverker & Birgitta Lerheden Scholarship Fund.

✧ Matthew Rhodes is represented by Rolin Artists exclusively in Scandinavia in collaboration with Stafford Law world.
